If you've suspected that there is a psychological reason behind your cluster headache, you may be right.
The first person I helped for cluster headaches was my friend Bobby and that was in 2007. He is now approaching the third anniversary of being free of cluster headaches. The people I have seen since him are also showing the same promise.
Bobby (not his real name) had suffered from cluster headaches for ten years. Then one day, as he was describing one of his cluster headache cycles to someone, I noticed a pattern in his words that led me to investigate if there could be a psychological reason that had caused the cluster headache in the first place
Doing some research into the subject, I was surprised to discover that cluster headaches affect around the same number of people in the UK as are affected by Multiple Sclerosis. Yet doctors are often unfamiliar with the condition and diagnosis is usually made by a neurosurgeon.
Bobby described the typical features of his cluster headache:
Because of the recurring nature of a cluster headache and the fact that it is possible to predict when the next attack would begin, it seemed to me logical to suspect that there was a psychological cause triggering a biological reaction.
I wanted to discover if it was possible to:
In 2007, a month before Bobby's cluster headache was due, he permitted me to analyse his mental and emotional state. I was looking for a psychological reason for his headache - perhaps a build up of stress that was lodged in a recess of his subconscious. As we talked, we did uncover two possible reasons and I helped him to "neutralise" their disturbances in a controlled and methodical manner.
The expected time for his cluster headache came and went without him having his cluster headache. In fact, since his therapy sessions back in 2007, Bobby has not had a single cluster headache!
I have incorporated therapy treatement for cluster headaches into my work and so far the results are looking promising. The number of people I have seen for this is still relatively small but with every new person I see, the results become more exciting.
I investigated if it was possible to:
Now, my clients tell me that yes, it is possible!
Words almost fail me. It [the cluster headache cycle] just got cut short and I'm almost afraid to believe what it means that it hasn't come back on. Some hairy moments when I thought I felt a shadow but I did as you said and I've been clear! I've suffered these for nearly fifteen years so to say this has changed my life would be the understatement of the year! Physically the scans show there is nothing wrong with me so I believe it was as you said trapped emotions in my mind. Very interesting therapy. I feel good. JT, Bucks
